Why?

The problem of greenwashing is a key policy issue that is high on the agenda of EU financial regulators, lawmakers, and financial institutions. The last two decades has seen exponential growth in green finance. Meanwhile, recorded cases of greenwashing have tripled over the past five years and are ubiquitous across sectors and regions since 2012. For financial institutions and regulators alike, it is crucial that sustainability claims are credible, limiting reputational, operational, and financial risks. For society, it is important that greenwashing is prevented if finance is to live up to its promise of supporting the achievement of SDG goals.

What?

Yet, there is a lack of a common understanding of what greenwashing is. Different stakeholders mean different things when referring to greenwashing. There are different forms of greenwashing and different degrees to which a project, product or company has been greenwashed. In essence, the term “greenwashing” has been taken for granted.

How?

This panel discussion will unpack some of these nuances from transdisciplinary perspectives, including from industry.
