The workshop brought together a relatively small group of participants, which contributed to a more intimate and focused atmosphere. While the session was long, this extended format allowed for a deeper engagement with the game and its underlying questions. Participants explored how environmental comfort in cities emerges through the interaction of spatial, social, and environmental factors, and how these dimensions are constantly negotiated in everyday urban life.
At the core of the session was a role-based serious game in which participants collaboratively addressed urban environmental challenges. The game itself was complex and required careful navigation of different roles, interests, and constraints. Through elements of roleplay, participants were asked to step into the perspectives of various urban actors and engage in processes of negotiation and collective decision-making.
A particularly interesting aspect of the game was its central objective: to identify and create spaces of environmental comfort across diverse actors. This required participants to balance personal incentives with broader city-level goals, often confronting trade-offs and competing priorities. Importantly, the game operated under the assumption that all actors acted in good faith. This premise shaped the tone of the interactions, encouraging constructive dialogue and collaborative problem-solving rather than adversarial dynamics.
The workshop was facilitated by Sina Ataee, who guided participants through the different stages of the game and supported reflection throughout the process. Lunch was provided, allowing for informal exchanges that complemented the structured activities of the day. Despite the demanding length and complexity of the session, the overall experience was highly valued. Students appreciated the opportunity to engage with an unconventional, hands-on learning format that differs from more traditional lecture-based approaches. The workshop offered not only new insights into urban dynamics but also a space to experiment with collaborative thinking and negotiation in practice. We are pleased to have hosted such an initiative, which brings a refreshing and experimental dimension to our programme.
