MARE People & The Sea 2017--SDG 14

Policy Day and Conference

15 May 2017

Following the June 2016 CSDS conference on Governance by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the social science Centre for Maritime Research (MARE), which is associated with the CSDS, is organizing a three-day international conference and a Policy Day in Amsterdam with a special focus on SDG 14 (life below water).

The People and the Sea Conference (5-7 July 2017) is the ninth conference organized by MARE since 2001 and will count approximately 300 participants. The guiding theme is ‘Dealing with Maritime Mobilities’. Ocean governance is an important theme.

The Policy Day (4 July 2017) focuses on the topic of ‘Stakeholder participation in marine management: connecting practice with theory’, and is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment of the Netherlands. Stakeholder participation is widely endorsed by European governments but is associated with several important dilemmas in implementation. The Policy Day is explicitly linked to SDG 14 and SDG 16, and is expected to contribute to better governance practices.

For more information on the conference and the Policy Day, see www.marecentre.nl.

The CSDS and MARE will maintain a blog on these events, which will also be posted on this website.
